ChatGPT just added a voice mode that actually works — and the UK's financial regulator officially put AI use in professional advice on its radar — which together make this the week to know what tools you're using and to actually pick one up and try it.

Accountants — Will the FCA's AI review change how you serve clients?

The FCA published its Mills Review this week — the first report of its kind from any regulator globally — mapping how AI will reshape financial advice, compliance, and fraud detection by 2030. The relevant part for your practice: firms using AI to help with client work will need to explain their process when regulators ask. That conversation is easier to have now than under review. This week, spend 20 minutes with ChatGPT drafting a one-line policy on which AI tools your practice uses and who checks the output before it goes to a client — that note is the start of your answer.

Trades — Your new site mate now speaks back

OpenAI rolled out GPT-Live today — a real voice conversation in ChatGPT, not the old robotic dictation. If you're on a Plus or Pro plan (roughly £20/month), update the app and try briefing it on your next job while you're driving: describe the scope, ask for a quote checklist, dictate a client message. Tradespeople are the natural fit here — the tool now works where you work, not just at a desk. Update the ChatGPT app on iOS or Android and tap the voice button to start.

Retail & Hospitality — AI you can talk to, finally

The new GPT-Live voice mode from OpenAI is live for paying ChatGPT users now, with free accounts following in the next few days. If you're on the floor, behind the bar, or in the kitchen, you can now speak to ChatGPT instead of typing. Use it this week to talk through a supplier problem, dictate a rota update, or respond to a tricky review out loud while your hands are on something else. The previous voice mode was slow and frustrating; this one is built for an actual back-and-forth conversation.

Agencies — The client brief that writes itself while you drive

Today's most immediately useful feature costs nothing extra if you already pay for ChatGPT: OpenAI's GPT-Live means you can brief the AI on a client campaign by speaking — in the car between meetings, walking between floors, or talking through an idea you don't want to lose. It listens, responds, and asks follow-up questions. A rough brief spoken in five minutes is a starting point you'd otherwise never have written. Update the ChatGPT app, tap the waveform icon, and use the next commute as a working session.

Professional Services — Your AI use is now on the regulator's radar

The FCA's Mills Review — described as the first of its kind from any regulator anywhere in the world — maps how AI will reshape advice, compliance, and risk by 2030. For solicitors, consultants, surveyors, and healthcare practices, the signal is straightforward: regulators are beginning to audit how firms use AI in client-facing work. You don't need to stop using Claude or ChatGPT to draft advice notes — but you do need to be able to describe your process. This week, ask your practice manager to log which AI tools your team uses and how the output gets reviewed before it reaches a client. The SRA, ICO, and RICS have all published AI guidance in the last 30 days; worth a read before your PI insurer raises it first.

Manufacturing & Wholesale — Talk your way to a better supplier email

Fresh news is thin for the factory floor this week — which makes it a good moment to try one thing: use ChatGPT to draft your next supplier negotiation email from a bullet-point brief. Describe the situation in plain terms, say what outcome you want, and ask it to write the email. It takes three minutes, and the result is usually clearer than what most teams send. If you want to go further, OpenAI's new GPT-Live voice mode — live now for paid users — lets you walk the floor, describe a production problem out loud, and get a spoken response. Same plan, new button.

Money on the table this week

No major AI-specific funding rounds opened this week for UK SMBs. The most reliable place to check what's currently available is Innovate UK's funding finder — competitions for businesses piloting AI or automation open and close on a rolling basis, and anything you've already tested in your business typically counts as evidence toward an application. If a grants adviser hasn't reviewed your options in the last six months, this is a low-cost week to make that call — most Growth Hubs offer an initial conversation at no charge.

Bottom line

The single highest-return action this week: if you or your team pay for ChatGPT, update the app today and use the new voice mode for one real task — it takes two minutes and could permanently change how useful the tool feels for anyone in your business who isn't sitting at a desk.
